General Guide to the Journal of the National Institute of Public Health

1. Introduction
The JOURNAL OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC HEALTH is the official Journal of the National Institute of Public Health, Japan.  The Journal publishes a broad range of manuscripts on research and activities contributing to promote and disseminate public health and social welfare improvements.  The editorial committee determines the publication propriety of manuscripts. The manuscripts should contain unpublished work, and the content should not simultaneously be under consideration for publication elsewhere.  The editorial committee receives contributions at any time, and contributions from authors in countries other than Japan are also welcome.

2. Categories of Manuscripts
Nine categories of publications are acceptable:

Peer-Reviewed Manuscripts:
Reviews: Summaries and reviews of surveysand researchin related areas. (Up to 12 pages*)
Original Articles: Articles including new findings based on original research. (Up to 10 pages*)
Brief Reports: Articles including some new findings, simpler than Original Articles. (Up to 5 pages*)
Research Data: Articles about surveys or statistical data. (Up to 8 pages*)
Practice Reports: Reports on practiceand education of public health and social welfare in Japan or elsewhere. (Up to 5 pages*)
Commentaries: Comments or proposals about actions, policies and trends of public health and social welfare. (Up to 5 pages*)

Non-Peer-Reviewed Manuscripts:
Notes: Synthetic description of public health activities, policies, advancements, problems and views described with references. (Up to 12 pages*)

Letters: Opinions for publication in the journal or timely reports of practices of public health and social welfare. (Up to 2 pages*)

Book Reviews: Articles to introduce books about public health and social welfare. (Up to 1 page*)
*Based on 850 English words per page. The Editorial Committee may ask for correction of contribution manuscripts or accept manuscripts exceeding the page limitations, when appropriate.

3. Special Topics
The Editorial Committee can specify special topics for each issue of the journal. The Editorial Committee can request specialists on the topic and/or call for articles.

4. Publication
The journal is published six times per year. Supplementary issues are published when necessary.

5. Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted by e-mail or postal mail of electronic media, accompanied by one printed copy of the manuscript including:
-a cover letter,
-an English abstract and keywords,
-a manuscript (preferably in Word format) and,
-tables and figures.
Authors should prepare manuscripts in accordance with Instruction to Authors, which follows on the next page.

6. Review
Peer-reviewed manuscripts submitted for publication are subject to editorial review and revision. During this process, the scientific content of the manuscripts is usually reviewed by at least two specialists in the relevant field. 

7. Publication Fees
There are no printing fees. A PDF copy of the article will be provided at no charge. Offprints are supplied at the author’s own cost in sets of 50 copies.

8. Author proofs 
The corresponding author is requested to check the proofs carefully, mark any printer’s errors, and answer queries as requested. Author changes should be kept to a minimum.

9. Copyright
Accepted manuscripts become the property of the National Institute of Public Health. The material may not be used elsewhere in the same form, without the consent of the Editorial Board.  The PDF version of articles will be published in the online Journal on the website of the National Institute of Public Health.
